Oil and Fuel

Before you hit the water, you’ll want to show your engine some love. As you know, this is one of the most important parts of your boat. Start by checking the oil, which will most likely need to be changed. You should also start the season with a new oil filter.

This is also a good time to check the fuel tank. You’ll either be replenishing an empty tank or inspecting the condition of your last batch of fuel. If you were responsible and stabilized your fuel before storing your boat, it might still be in good condition. If not, you’ll likely need to drain the old fuel and replace it with a fresh batch.

Battery Checks

It’s no secret that batteries are vulnerable to extreme weather. The best way to ensure your battery continues holding a charge is to place it on a tender. This is something you should have done before you stored it during the off-season. When spring comes around, you’ll know that your battery will be in good shape.

Either way, you’ll want to inspect the battery before taking your boat out. Once you’ve confirmed the battery still has a charge, inspect the terminals and clean off any corrosion. Next, check the wire connections. A small amount of corrosion isn’t a huge deal, but extremely corroded batteries should be replaced.

Inspect the Exterior

The exterior of your boat is susceptible to damage as well. You’ll want to take a closer look and check for any signs of major disrepair. Some common problems you may encounter include mold or mildew on the carpeting or vinyl surfaces, rusted or corroded metal, cracks in the gel coat, and pest infestations. If you experience any of these issues, be sure to address them during spring commissioning.

Replace Safety Gear

While you may not always need to replace safety gear at the start of each season, this is the time to check. All of your gear should be in good condition and functioning properly. Examine your personal flotation devices (PFDs) to check for any signs of sun damage or tears that may render them useless.

Take a look at your first-aid kits and replace any items that have expired or run out. You’ll be checking the ointments, medications, bandages, and so on. You’ll also need a working fire extinguisher. Finally, confirm that your boating insurance and registration documents are current.
